Kelowna company fined $67K after worker seriously injured by table saw

A B.C. renovation company has been issued a $67,000 fine from WorkSafeBC after a worker in Kelowna suffered serious injuries while operating a table saw.

WorkSafeBC fined Colonial Countertops $67,435 after it found the table's saw guard had not been adjusted properly at the time of the incident.

WorkSafeBC says the Kelowna work site was being inspected following the incident where the worker received serious injuries while operating the table saw.

Precise details of the incident aren't given out by WorkSafeBC.

In addition to the table saw, WorkSafe also found no safe work procedures were in place and there were no records of worker training.

"The firm failed to ensure that guards were not removed from equipment, a repeated violation," the decision reads. "The firm also failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety."

WorkSafeBC says both these issues are high-risk violations.
