UPDATE: Tsunami advisory cancelled for B.C. after volcano eruption in Tonga Islands

A tsunami advisory issued for B.C. due to a volcano eruption near the Tonga Islands has now been rescinded.

Emergency Info B.C. issued a tsunami advisory for B.C.’s coast as well as the outer west coast of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii this morning. The alert has since been rescinded.

The advisory remained in place for several hours.

“Overnight, several communities along the coast activated their emergency plans. Emergency Management B.C. immediately activated the Provincial Emergency Co-ordination Centre, and all provincial regional operations centres on the coast. The agency has also been supporting local governments and First Nations with updates and a series of co-ordination calls," said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth.
