Noted Kamloops neurosurgeon passes away
KAMLOOPS – Dr. Gur Singh, a leader in the community and the medical field, passed away Tuesday morning.
Singh, a neurosurgeon, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease last year and passed away Tuesday, March 24.
“My beloved father passed away peacefully this morning at Royal Inland Hospital, a hospital he served passionately for almost half a century,” his son Coun. Arjun Singh said in a post to Facebook. “He was an incredible man who lived an incredible life. We will miss him fiercely.”
He joined Royal Inland Hospital in 1967 and officially retired last summer. During that time Singh was the first neurosurgeon to work in the Interior and he helped to establish the first neurosurgical unit and the first neuro intensive care unit in the region. He served as the chief of staff at the hospital for many years.
He has been awarded for his involvement in the community, which included serving on the board of the B.C. Medical Association, involvement in the Downtown Rotary Club and with the Kamloops Brain Injury Association.
In 2004 the first Annual Gur Singh Invitational Golf Tournament was held, raising $17,000 for the brain injury association. More than 200 golfers take part in the tournament every year since and well over $1 million has been raised by the tournament in the past 11 years.

I would not be alive today if not for this wonderfully clever & talented neurosurgeon saving my life at RIH in 1978. I am so sorry to learn of his disease & of his passing. His skills & contributions to the City of Kamloops will be surely missed. He was always such a large man & his presence seemed everlasting. My condolences to all his family & friends.
