A rescued kitten with one-eye  needs help with its veterinarian bills at the B.C. SPCA shelter in Kelowna.

Merritt the kitten was among a litter of four that was found underneath a townhouse in Prince Rupert and taken to the local shelter, according to a press release from the B.C. SPCA.

The kittens all arrived underweight, dehydrated, lethargic and were not eating. Merritt’s eye looked very cloudy and veterinarians were hoping to save it, so the kitten – along with a new, bonded sister named Hope – was transferred to the Kelowna SPCA for better treatment.

“When Merritt arrived at the shelter we hoped there was enough blood supply to her eye to make it viable,” Sean Hogan, manager of SPCA Kelowna, said in the release. “Unfortunately the scar tissue that has developed on her eye was restricting blood flow and the tissue was beginning to die so she required surgery to have the eye removed.”

Now, Merritt needs months of on-going care including vaccinations, and medications for de-worming and pain control.

“Merritt is a sweet kitten who is playful and cuddly,” said Hogan. “She is bonded to her sister Hope and we will be looking for a home for both of them once Merritt has recovered from her surgery. Merritt’s other siblings have already been adopted in Prince Rupert.”
