B.C. prison nurse faces hearing for alleged ‘romantic’ relationship with inmate

A B.C. nurse is alleged to have had a relationship with an inmate while working within the prison system.

According to the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives decision, Julia Filtness was employed by Corrections Services Canada as a clinical services nurse when she entered into a relationship with a prisoner.

The College alleges that Filtness entered into a "romantic and/or sexual relationship" while working at the unnamed prison.

The decision says Filtness continued the relationship after the previously incarcerated person was released.

The College says Filtness' conduct broke professional and practice standards, including ethical practice standards, and the boundaries in the nurse-client relationship.

"This conduct also constitutes unprofessional conduct and/or professional misconduct," the decision reads.

The decision does not say where or when the alleged relationship took place.

Filtness is due to appear in front of the Discipline Committee of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives for a hearing June 27.

The College is also taking action against the nurse for failing to produce two medical reports completed in August and October last year.

The College says this constitutes professional misconduct or unprofessional conduct.

No other information is given by the College.

Ben Bulmer

After a decade of globetrotting, U.K. native Ben Bulmer ended up settling in Canada in 2009. Calling Vancouver home he headed back to school and studied journalism at Langara College. From there he headed to Ottawa before winding up in a small anglophone village in Quebec, where he worked for three years at a feisty English language newspaper. Ben is always on the hunt for a good story, an interesting tale and to dig up what really matters to the community.
