Kelowna bus stabber back in jail but may get out soon

The prolific offender who stabbed someone to death on a Kelowna bus has a chance to get out of custody next week.

Tyler Jack Newton served his sentence related to the bus stabbing, and is now facing three charges in relation to an incident on Dec. 31, 2021.

Newton, born 1990, has 19 files on the the provincial public record and the earliest charge goes back to 2009. He is scheduled for a bail hearing on July 8.

In March, Newton was sentenced to a combined five months in jail and four years of probation after being found guilty of breach of release and possession of stolen property.

But Newton is probably best known for stabbing Caesar Rosales on a city bus Oct. 30, 2014 for no apparent reason. Rosales died of his injuries.

The most recent charges are related to assault and the use of an imitation firearm, and the alleged offences were committed in West Kelowna. Newton’s co-accused is Dayton Lloyd McAlpine, who is also facing three charges in relation to the same Dec. 31 incident.

McAlpine, born 1987, remains in custody and is scheduled to consult legal council on July 7.

McAlpine has 60 files on B.C.’s public court registry which span from 2006 to 2022. He spent a month on the lam after his alleged crimes before he was busted in February.

He was also on the lam for a week in 2019.

After being found guilty of flight from police and dangerous operation of a conveyance, Newton was sentenced to a combined 98 days in prison, four year probation order and four year driving prohibition.
