Luke Skywalker found guilty of murder

PENTICTON — Luke Skywalker didn’t stand a chance as students made their cases in a mock trial held at the Penticton courthouse today.

Grade 12 law students from Princess Margaret Secondary dressed in full costume depicting famous Star Wars characters for the murder trial of Luke Skywalker. Skywalker was charged with the death of nearly 6,000 people who were on the Death Star the night he blew it up.

Crown counsel called witnesses to the stand including, Princess Leia, Hans Solo, Darth Vader and a Star Trooper. Skywalker also took the witness stand and admitted to committing the crime.

The jury of three women and two men found the accused guilty on all charges. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Penticton lawyer and bar member Tyrone Duerr looked down from the Judge’s chair at colleagues Crown counsellors Nashina Devji and Catherine Crockett as they played along with the trial.

Trevor Robinson, Vice Principal and law teacher at Princess Margaret smiled as he watched his students fully embody their characters and have a few good laughs.

Robinson and Duerr were the main organizers of the event, that will also see middle school students run a trial Friday afternoon.

A former lawyer himself, Robinson thought it would be a good opportunity for the students to come in and see how the court works — it’s not every day that Luke Skywalker ends up in the prisoner’s box of a Penticton courtroom.
