WASHINGTON – Joe Oliver is being greeted with words of condolence from fellow finance ministers around the world.
His arrival on the global stage in his new role coincides with the sudden death of Jim Flaherty, his longtime predecessor.
Oliver says that when he arrived in Washington other finance ministers kept coming up to him to express their sadness, and their admiration for Flaherty.
Oliver is there for the annual spring meeting of global financial institutions, including the IMF, the World Bank and ministers and central-bank heads from the G20.
Canada's new finance minister says it appears his predecessor was as admired by peers around the world as he was at home.
He says he spoke with Flaherty by phone soon after last month's cabinet shuffle.
He says Flaherty was supportive, but wouldn't get into the details because he says they mainly discussed personal matters.
