Friendly Kamloops fire crew cools kids off with giant sprinkler

A powerful sprinkler blasting from the top of a fire engine drew a crowd at a park in Kamloops yesterday evening, July 27.

With scorching summer temperatures continuing throughout the week it was a perfect way to cool off at David Thompson Elementary School park.

“That was our paid on-call crew from Westsyde,” said Kamloops Fire and Rescue Platoon Captain Will Harlock. “They do training every Wednesday night, practise and check all of their equipment.”

The fire crew took the opportunity to help cool everyone down and provide some lighthearted fun for their community.

Local resident and mom Jenn Kalman is disappointed she and her son missed out on the fun.

She is hoping the department will do it again.

“We would love to be notified if they are going to do this again,” she said. “I have a 9-year-old that would have loved this. It looked like so much fun, what an awesome way for kids to cool off in this heat and also be reminded about fire safety at the same time.”

Local resident Katherine Andersen watched the fun and took some photos.

“They were there for about an hour,” she said. “They show up, usually on a Wednesday, to practice their maneuvers or whatever. Sometimes they draw a few people with kids because it is fun to watch. We certainly enjoy watching them whenever they show up. This is the first time I've seen so many kids enjoying the water.”
