WestJet to start flying from Penticton to Vancouver

WesJet will start flying to Vancouver from the Penticton Airport next year.

The airline announced today, Aug. 8, it will have six flights a week from Penticton to Vancouver starting in February 2023.

"The addition of new intra-provincial routes is critical as we invest in our presence in the west and look to strengthen our offerings to ensure British Columbians have more access to convenient and affordable air travel," WestJet Director of government relations and regulatory affairs Jared Mikoch-Gerke said in a media release.

WestJet will fly outbound from Penticton to Vancouver, every day but Saturday, with a daily flight at 2 p.m. A flight to Penticton will leave Vancouver at 12:45 p.m. The flight takes 50 minutes.

"The expansion of WestJet service is another example of the growth that Penticton is experiencing," Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki said in the release. "As more and more people recognize the advantages of living and working here, the addition of more direct flights to Vancouver will benefit everyone – from tourists to businesspeople. I’m pleased WestJet sees the potential for growth and look forward to the partnership between the airline and the airport being a strong factor in our economic development."

The airline will use a fleet of WestJet-branded 34-seat Saab 340 aircraft.

It's the only airline to fly to both Calgary and Vancouver from Penticton, the airline said.

The media release does not say how much flights will cost.

Ben Bulmer

After a decade of globetrotting, U.K. native Ben Bulmer ended up settling in Canada in 2009. Calling Vancouver home he headed back to school and studied journalism at Langara College. From there he headed to Ottawa before winding up in a small anglophone village in Quebec, where he worked for three years at a feisty English language newspaper. Ben is always on the hunt for a good story, an interesting tale and to dig up what really matters to the community.
