Good Friday fire destroys a home in Cawston

PENTICTON – A house was reduced to rubble after a fire last night in Cawston and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Keremeos and District Volunteer firefighters were called to the fire at a home on Armstrong Drive just before 10 p.m., Friday, April 3.

“The fire was located at the south end of Cawston. It was up on the bench and highly visible,” Keremeos Fire Chief Jordy Bosscha says.

No one was home at the time of the fire and Bosscha says he suspects the house wasn't occupied.

Bosscha says the house is a complete loss with an excavator called in to knock down the remaining walls so crews could get to the hot spots. Firefighters were on scene for close to five hours.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.

Osoyoos firefighters were also called and responded with an engine and five firefighters. Bosscha says even though a duty crew was on hand, initial numbers of firefighters were low, with members arriving on scene as the incident progressed.

Police, B.C. Ambulance and Fortis were also called to the scene.
