It’s going to get hot in Kamloops, Kelowna and Penticton

People in the South Thompson, Central and South Okanagan regions should brace for temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius later this week. 

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the South Thompson, including Kamloops, the Central and South Okanagan, including Kelowna and Penticton, and the Fraser Canyon from tomorrow, Aug. 17, through to Friday. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach highs of 35 Celsius to 40 C. Overnight lows will be near 18 C.

The weather office blames a strong ridge of high pressure for the short-lived heat wave.

The heat wave will end on Friday when unsettled weather and cooler temperatures are forecast for the region.

"Extreme heat affects everyone. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place," the heat warning says.

"Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day. Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building."
