Former Vernon teacher jailed for historic sex crimes banned from classroom

Anoop Singh Klair won't teach in B.C. schools again after he was convicted of historic sex crimes against at four minors.

Klair was charged in 2018 with eight criminal offences, with a later conviction for four of those charges on May 14, 2021, and a prison sentence delivered on Sept. 15.

He was teaching in Vernon before he was charged, according to a Global Okanagan report. He signed an agreement stating that he would not teach, however, in the same year the charges against him were approved.

He signed that agreement on Nov. 15, 2018, which was six days after the teacher commissioner considered his offences for a future consent resolution agreement, according to the decision.

The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation pulled his licence to teach permanently, according to a decision published, Aug. 16.

Klair signed the agreement on July 13, while still serving his three-and-a-half year prison sentence.

The decision does not explain when the offences took place, but Global Okanagan reported they fell between 1999 and 2003 and none of his victims were students.

He was issued a licence to teach in 2007.

According to the teachers regulation decision, he engaged in "repeated victimization of minors over an extended period of time." It continues to say that he "undermined the integrity" of the teaching profession.
