UPDATE: Human remains not so human

PEACHLAND – The human remains found near Peachland on Friday aren’t human.

RCMP say after further forensic investigation, they can now confirm the remains are not human.

What police were investigating were the partial skeletal remains of a bear.

In an email sent to InfoTel News on Sunday, Sgt. Rob Vermeulen stated, “Police have confirmed that the remains are human and foul play is suspected in the person’s death.”

Investigators from the Southeast District Major Crime Unit cordoned off an area near Trepanier Road in Peachland when the remains were reported to police by a person walking their dog on Friday.

Police were at the scene all weekend.

The B.C. Coroners Service had been called in to determine the victim’s identity, age, ethnicity and gender.

In a media release sent Monday, Vermeulen says, “Our file has concluded.”
