Vernon man arrested after armed standoff in Cherryville

A Vernon man is in custody after a standoff with police in Cherryville that lasted for hours yesterday.

Officers responded, Aug. 21, at roughly 10:30 a.m., to a camp site in the 400 block of Sugar Lake Road in Cherryville to find a suspect related to an ongoing investigation, according to a press release from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

Shortly after their arrival, the officers found the man who had a gun.

Police contained the area and additional resources, including members of the RCMP’s Southeast District Emergency Response Team, were called to assist.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., the man surrendered to police and was taken into custody safely without further incident, RCMP said.

The suspect, a 34-year old Vernon man, remains in custody and is expected to appear in court later today, Aug. 22. 

No injuries were reported.
