Violence erupts at underage Kamloops beach party
Several calls on Saturday night led Kamloops RCMP to a underage party at Overlander park where one teen was drunk and unconscious and several other people complaining of assault.
There was an estimated 50 teenagers at the beach when police were called around 11 p.m., Sept. 10, to an intoxicated and unconscious partygoer nearby, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.
The youth was taken to hospital by paramedics before police learned they were also assaulted by a "small group of teenagers," according to the release.
The victim had non-life-threatening injuries, but the overnight incidents prompted police to urge parents to talk to their kids about their behaviour.
“We are asking parents and guardians to talk to youth about what responsible behaviour looks like, before police have to get involved, issue tickets, and make arrests,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a news release.
The first assault report was one of at least three police would receive stemming from the party.
“While responding to the party on Sept. 10, police officers on scene were met with another assault allegation, as well as several verbally aggressive and confrontational parties,” Evelyn said.
Another assault was reported to the detachment the next day, involving two victims who were "attacked by a small group of teens," the release reads. At least one person is a suspect for more than one assault that night.
“Police are working in partnership with the School District 73 in response to the recent allegations and safety planning,” Evelyn said.
According to police, RCMP and Community Service Officers responded to party complaints all over the city this summer, involving underage drinking, drug use, fighting, weapon possession and vandalism.
Police named Pioneer Park as another coming party spot.
