KELOWNA – Sport enthusiasts can rejoice as the City of Kelowna’s sports fields are officially open today, April 7.
Throughout the season, crews will perform routine field maintenance. The City asks that residents respect the closures and stay off the fields as this allows the turf to be repaired so that teams can get back on high-quality fields faster. The field maintenance schedule can be found online at kelowna.ca/recreation.
Sports field turf is not an average lawn. Residents may notice that sports fields are mowed at a shorter height and watered more frequently than in other parts of the park to provide optimum playing conditions. Many sports fields are sand-based to guard against compaction and because sand doesn’t hold the water as well as soil, it requires more frequent watering.
Public park washrooms are also open until 8 p.m. daily, with the exception of the washrooms located at Hot Sands Beach in City Park which are closed for renovations until end of May. Portable toilets will be available at Hot Sands Beach during this time.
