Trans-Canada through Kicking Horse Canyon reopens for long weekend

Anybody travelling between B.C. and Alberta on the Trans-Canada Highway this Thanksgiving long weekend can go straight through Golden instead of the 1.5 hour detour.

The Kicking Horse Canyon section of Highway 1 reopens for long weekend travel at noon tomorrow, Oct. 7.

That section of the highway will remain open with no work stoppages until noon on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

It has been completely closed to traffic since Sept. 26 to upgrade 4.8 kilometres of the highway through the canyon.

This long weekend will be the only time motorists can use this stretch of the highway before it's scheduled to reopen again at 6 a.m. on Dec. 1.

Anyone travelling through Golden before or after this weekend will have to take a scenic 1.5 hour detour through Kootenay National Park and the Columbia Valley.
