B.C. teacher banned for life after child sex abuse conviction

A B.C. teacher who was sentenced to 20 months in jail for child sex abuse has been banned from teaching for life.

According to an Oct. 3 B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, Michael Larence Haire had his home searched in September 2018 and various electronic devices seized.

He resigned from the Abbotsford School District days later and shortly afterwards Crown prosecutors laid two charges related to child sex abuse.

In June this year, he was sentenced to 20 months in jail and placed on the national sex offenders registry for life.

"Haire acted unethically and failed to maintain the integrity of the teaching profession by violating laws that protect minors from sexual exploitation," the decision read.

Haire is the third teacher in B.C. this year to have been banned for life after being convicted of internet child sex abuse.

The decision said Haire began teaching in B.C. in 2007 and was working within the Abbotsford school district when he was arrested.

The decision said the school district only became aware he had been charged with child sex abuse when it read about it in the media.

Shortly after Haire was charged he signed an undertaking not to teach in B.C.

Haire signed a consent resolution agreement agreeing to a lifetime ban from teaching.

While the former school teacher agreed he would not teach in B.C. back in 2018, the recent consent resolution summary closes the file.
