Man brought into custody after five hour standoff with Vernon RCMP

VERNON – A 70-year-old man was taken into custody Friday morning after a five-hour stand-off.

Officers were called to a fourplex in the 4900 block of Old Kamloops Road just before 1 a.m. April 10 for a report of a distraught man, police said this morning.

“He’d had a confrontation with a neighbour and then barricaded himself in his residence,” RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said.

As a precaution, police closed off Old Kamloops Road while negotiating with the man to come out.

“There is some indication a weapon was involved,” Molendyk said.

Around 6:30 a.m. the incident ended peacefully with the man being brought into custody. Molendyk says it’s too early to tell if any charges are to be expected. No one was injured during the incident.

As of 7 a.m., the highway was still closed, but was expected to reopen shortly.
