RCMP looking for person of interest in suspicious Kootenay death

The RCMP's Southeast District Major Crime Unit are asking for the public’s help to locate a person of interest in a suspicious death investigation in the border community of Kingsgate in the Kootenays.

Michael Mawley is a person of interest in a suspicious death investigation related to a fire at his family residence in Kingsgate on Nov. 19, according to an RCMP press release.

Any suspicious activity in that area should be reported to police immediately, RCMP said. Anybody with dash cam or video footage from that area between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. local time on Nov. 19 is asked to contact police.

Investigators are interested in speaking with Mawley, as soon as possible, RCMP said. He has ties to Alberta and Idaho.

Mawley is described as a Caucasian male with brown hair and brown eyes. He's 5'11" tall and 150 lb.

"If Michael hears or sees this call for information, we ask him to contact the police of jurisdiction," RCMP Insp. Brent Novakosko said in the release.

Any who sees Mawley is asked to call 9-1-1 and not approach him.
