B.C. SPCA wants feds to hurry up and ban export of horses for slaughter
The B.C. SPCA is renewing its call to ban the export of horses for slaughter.
More than 40,000 horses raised in Canada have been exported to be slaughtered overseas since 2013, according to a release from the SPCA.
Last year, a petition demanding a federal ban on the practice was launched and it was signed by more than 77,000 Canadians, according to the release.
The SPCA points out how Minister of Agriculture Marie-Claude Bibeau was mandated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in December 2021 to ban the live export of horses for slaughter.
“Approximately 2,000 horses have been transported since this announcement, while Canadians wait for action from the federal government,” the SPCA claims.
A new petition has been launched to renew the call for action.
