Early Christmas present for Peachland skaters

Peachland and area residents can start lacing up their skates in anticipation of the opening of the community's municipal rink — thanks to local firefighters.

The volunteer firefighters have been maintaining the rink since its inception five years ago.

The rink has since been moved from Turner Park to Mountainview Park off Princeton Avenue because it's colder up there.

Peachland firefighters flood the rink at least once a day – weather permitting.

"The snow has set us back a little bit. We haven't been able to flood as much as we like," Peachland Fire and Rescue deputy fire chief Matt Stoltz said. "But if all goes well, we hope to have the rink open at the end of this week."

Hockey sticks are permitted. There's a smaller rink for those who don't want to play hockey or just want to skate.

Night skating wraps up at 10 p.m. when the lights turn off. The rink is open seven days a week and there is a bathroom on site.
