PENTICTON – The people living on the West Bench are drinking water right from the tap in the first time in years.

Interior Health says the water from the new West Bench Water System is safe following a $9.8 million dollars in improvements.

The permanent boil water advisory was lifted on Friday.

The new supply main and booster station is bringing filtered water to the 1,100 residents.

They used to drink chlorine treated water pumped from Okanagan Lake near the mouth of the river channel. Water quality was constantly a problem.

The upgrade to the system was approved in a referendum in 2012.

The Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen is planning a public open house this summer. A date hasn’t been set yet.
