Canada Bread says it will close North Bay, Ont., bakery in August
TORONTO – Canada Bread says it will close its bakery in North Bay, Ont., in August after shifting production to other locations.
The bakery employs 62 people and makes buns, rolls and sliced breads.
It says employees will receive severance payments and counselling, and are encouraged to apply to other Canada Bread plants.
The company has about 4,500 employees at 19 bakeries and makes products under various brands including Dempster’s, Villaggio and Vachon.
It says most of the North Bay operation’s production will be moved to bakeries in Ontario and Quebec.
Canada Bread has been owned by a Mexican company since May 2014, when Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods (TSX:MFI) sold its majority share to Grupo Bimbo.
