Giant Monterey cypress on Olympic Peninsula to be cut down
PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. – One of the largest Monterey cypress trees in Washington is rotting on the inside and must be cut down.
The tree that’s 60 feet (18 metres) tall and 33 feet (10 metres) round is on property owned by John Eissinger and next to his Blue Gull Inn Bed and Breakfast in Port Townsend.
About a third of the 150-year-old tree broke off last week and damaged three vehicles.
Eissinger tells KING-TV that a University of Washington tree expert says the tree is a danger and should be removed.
Eissinger says a tree company that uses big cranes is scheduled to remove the tree in November.
He says about 10 feet (3 metres) of the base of the tree will remain and made into a bench or a wood carving.
