Man totals truck after avoiding stalled car with child in it

To avoid hitting a stalled car with a child in it, a Knutsford resident rolled and totalled his own pickup truck and was sent to hospital with injuries yesterday on Highway 5 near East Shuswap Road on the Tk'emlups Indian Band.

Police were called to the scene about 3:45 p.m. yesterday after a car broke down in heavy traffic, causing a collision as a vehicle tried to avoid it.

The Toyota Camry broke down in the inside lane of Highway 5 across the intersection of Shuswap Road.

A blue Dodge pickup truck travelling about 85 kilometres per hour immediately tried to avoid the vehicle, with the female driver and a child still inside, and ultimately hit another.

"As the Dodge avoided the car, that driver lost control, skidded in a side to side motion and clipped another southbound vehicle on the front driver's fender," said Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird in a press release issued today. "The same dodge left the roadway catching the raised paved shoulder and tearing off a rear truck tire."

The truck rolled once before coming to a rest position on it's wheels.

The middle-aged Knutsford man driving the truck was transported to Royal Inland Hospital with multiple injuries including a deep gash to his head, but he is listed in stable condition.

His truck, however, was not so lucky and was totalled in the collision.
