School doors not completely closed as teachers walk the picket line

PENTICTON – Schools have not completely shut down, despite the wall of teachers picketing the front lines.

Teachers and administrators are not trying to prevent students from entering the schools at all; students needing to clean out their lockers, if they haven’t already done so, can come by their school and collect their things.

Administrators are working inside schools and will supervise provincial exams, which begin tomorrow, said Leslea Woodward, president of the Okanagan-Similkameen Teachers’ Union.

Buses will pick up and drop off grade 10 and 12 students taking the exams, just as they have been all year, Woodward said.

If parents or students have any questions, they should call their school’s administrator at the front office, Woodward said. Most contact information can be found on schools’ individual websites, Facebook pages, or at the School District website.

Even though administrators will be available to answer questions and supervise exams, teachers will not be working the rest of the school year as a result of full strike action, which  began today. Final exams (excluding provincial exams) have all been cancelled and students will not be receiving end-of-the-year report cards.
