Osoyoos RCMP help save hawk’s life

PENTICTON – Osoyoos RCMP handled a trio of incidents that involved land, water and air this week.

In the air, on Friday, April 24, a Kestral Hawk flew into the grill of a commercial truck driver’s rig while travelling between Rock Creek and Osoyoos.

The driver sought help at the Osoyoos RCMP detachment after finding the hawk alive, but stuck in the grill. With assistance from Cpl. Jason Bayda, the hawk was removed and turned over to the South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls where it was assessed and found to be in relatively good condition.

On Sunday, April 19, Osoyoos RCMP responded to a boat fire on Osoyoos Lake. Two vessels, tied together and left unoccupied, were fully engulfed by the time fire crews arrived on scene.

The vessels were moored in front of a public beach in an area where moorage is not allowed. Police had previously received complaints about one of the vessels.

There is no definitive cause as to the fire’s origin, but it is believed to have resulted from improperly stored flammables on board.

Meanwhile, police attended a motorcycle accident on Highway 3 at the Lookout on Anarchist Mountain on Saturday, April 18.

A 23-year-old West Kelowna man failed to negotiate the sharp turn on a 1999 Harley Davidson and struck the centre median. The rider suffered a possible fracture to his hand.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
