Kamloops firefighter helping with efforts in Nepal
KAMLOOPS – One of Kamloops’ very own firefighters departed Tuesday, April 28, to help out efforts in Nepal following last weekend's crippling earthquake.
Nepal was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake on April 25. So far the death toll has hit more than 5,000 and thousands more have been left homeless.
Kamloops Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Steve Kilmartin says Lt. David Sakaki will join GlobalMedic, a volunteer association to help with disaster relief.
“It’s a great cause. He does a lot of stuff like that. He goes over there on his own quarter,” Kilmartin says, adding Sakaki will be in Nepal for the next three weeks.
Sakaki had just returned from other volunteer efforts in Central America before leaving for South Asia this week.
