Small grass fire sparked when old hydro pole topples in Lake Country

LAKE COUNTRY – An old, tired hydro pole on Okanagan Centre Road between Goldie and Carrs Landing Roads finally gave up the ghost Wednesday and fell over, pulling live wires down with it, sparking a small grass fire.

Firefighters were called to a report of lines down and smoke at about 10 a.m., but it didn't take long to control the small wildfire that was fueled by grass and some brush. Okanagan Landing Road was blocked and residents were asked to stay out of the zone until Fortis B.C. could tend to the downed lines.

The toppled pole was seen leaning in recent days.

B.C. Hydro is reporting 2489 customers are without power as a result of the incident. The estimated time power will be restored is 6 p.m.
