Mounties shoot moose in downtown Kelowna

KELOWNA – RCMP had to shoot and kill a moose in downtown Kelowna early this morning after it was hit by an SUV on Harvey Avenue.

Cpl. Joe Duncan says the call came in shortly after 4 a.m., May 1, and RCMP arrived to find a badly injured moose in the westbound lanes of the highway between Burtch and Gordon.

The passenger in the vehicle, who is from Vernon, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver, a Kelowna man, was unhurt.

“Obviously the truck had significant front-end damage,” he says. (The moose) was dispatched by police.”

A crane was brought in to load the body onto a flatbed truck before it was taken away.

Duncan says although he has seen deer in the parking lot of the Doyle detachment, this is the first time he has heard of a moose this close to downtown.

  1. I was the passenger in the 1 ton dually p.u. that was written offwhen the moose jumped the median onto the front end of the truck, It was approx. 1200 lb and was a cow moose. The mounties put approx. 15 shots into the moose to kill it over a 5 min period with a hand gun, I’m sure the moose suffered even more because of the lack of knowledge on how to effectively kill this animal, why not was a rifle used? I guess the rcmp don’t encounter moose in the downtown area usually, but still maybe a conservation officer should of been dispatched as per the shots were 1/2 hr. after the incident anyhow. But I thank them anyhow and the medics whom where on site immediately, and the Palidan Security driver whom stopped behind us and immediately called 911. D. Adams Vernon B.C.

  2. It’s “wasted” not “waisted” and the moose could have weighed 500KG or more, that would take quite a few people to lift.Calling in more cops to lift it would probably cost more than the crane. :)

Story bating… Good job info news. With a header like Mounties shoot moose… It’s sure to get ppl to click. Shows your corrupt mindset. And yes, it sparked my curiosity. But the truth is, the header should have been, moos hit by vehicle in Kelowna.
