RCMP nab driver travelling double posted speed limit

Vernon cops stopped a driver Saturday night who was cruising over two times faster than permitted. 

The driver was going 114 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone— 64 kilometers over—as he passed through a turn lane.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk is shocked, but says speeding is no rarity on North Okanagan streets.

Last Thursday, members of Vernon's Integrated Road Safety Unit conducted aggressive driving enforcement on Highway 97 near Oyama.

Over two hours, 30 violation tickets were issued for speeding. A further six tickets were handed out for other traffic offenses, including not having a valid license.

Two vehicles were impounded for seven days and their drivers were charged with excessive speed for traveling 45 and 53 km/hr over the posted 90 km/hr speed limit.

Molendyk says it's good timing for Canadian Road Safety Week (May 13-20) which aims to make the country's roads among the safest in the world by 2015.   

Molendyk says the campaign is used to educate the public about safe driving.

"Our units are gearing up so you can expect to see more activity on the roads," Molendyk says.
