The Latest: Coast Guard says good Samaritans 1st at scene

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Latest on a boating fatality in southeast Alaska (all times local):

11:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard says good Samaritans in two boats responded to a fatal boating collision in southeast Alaska late Wednesday night and transported the four survivors to a beach until a Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived.

Alaska State Troopers say 44-year-old Elizabeth Eskelin died after the skiff she was travelling in with one other adult and three minors collided with a piling. A Coast Guard crew was unable to resuscitate her at the scene at Althorp Cove, about 60 miles west of Juneau.

Troopers say the survivors were taken to Juneau for medical treatment. Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says one of the minors was seriously injured, but she adds that none of the survivors are believed to have received life-threatening injuries.

Peters identifies the surviving adult as 33-year-old Dolly Mitchell. Her hometown was not immediately available.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Meredith Manning says troopers are leading the investigation of the incident because it involved a recreational vessel.

10 a.m.

A 44-year-old woman has died in a boating collision near Elfin Cove in southeast Alaska.

Alaska State Troopers say they Elfin Cove resident Elizabeth Eskelin died after the skiff she was travelling in with four others struck something in the water. Troopers were notified by the Coast Guard shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

According to troopers, several of the people in the boat were ejected into the water when the collision occurred.

Troopers say the four survivors were taken to Juneau for medical treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Coast Guard representatives did not immediately respond to calls for further information.
