New charity funds arts programs for Oliver students

PENTICTON – A new charity promises to help fund arts programs for children in the South Okanagan.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards announced the launch of their new charity today, Sept. 15.

Celebrate the Arts has been established to fund fine arts programs for children in the local Oliver area.

A cheque for $6,000 was presented this past weekend to Lori Martine from Oliver Elementary School during the final concert of Tinhorn Creek Vineyards’ Canadian Concert series.

The money will go to Tuc El Nuit Elementary and South Okanagan Secondary to fund extra programs for students in music, drama, dance and fine arts.

“We want to encourage the next generation of artists and performers by inspiring them through school programs a giving children an outlet for expression,” Tinhorn Creek Vineyards President Sandra Oldfield says, adding the vineyard brings people together through its music series and wishes to continue to involve the local community in vineyard activities.

Tinhorn Creek also plans to make in-kind donations through the use of their outdoor amphitheatre, tasting room and barrel cellar for performances and rehearsals, and through the use of their guest suite for visiting performers. A portion of the proceeds from the Tinhorn Creek Canadian Concert Series next season will go to Celebrate the Arts, as will a portion of the vineyard’s annual income.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
