LOGAN LAKE – Highland Valley Copper mine announced a number of layoffs at its Logan Lake mine today, Nov. 5.
The company laid off nine non-union, or management personnel in an effort to trim six per cent of its workforce by the end of 2016.
“This is an ongoing response to market conditions,” Peter Martell superintendent of environment and community affairs at Highland Valley says adding this is part of a continuing effort to decrease costs.
Martell says the falling price of copper is to blame.
“We're hoping that the remaining work force reduction will take place through attrition,” Martell says.
He says there are no plans currently for further layoffs.
