UPDATE: Wildfire at Campbell Mountain contained and in mop-up

PENTICTON – A fire burning near the bottom of Campbell Mountain is 100 per cent contained, as crews worked overnight.

The fire near the landfill on Spiller Road in Penticton was called in around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and grew to be approximately five hectares in size. Ground and air crews responded immediately to the fire.

Helicopters were bucketing the fire, grabbing the water they needed from Okanagan Lake, and air tankers from the air base at the Penticton Airport hit the fire hard with repeated drops of retardant on Thursday.

A small Penticton Fire Rescue crew remains on the scene and will continue to mop-up and patrol on Friday and Saturday.

No structures were ever threatened.

Niva Martin who owns the nearby La Frenz winery said it's concerning to have a fire burning so close. She was happy to see the crews respond so quickly and take care of the problem.

Martin, who has owned the winery for 15 years, says there have been some other fires but nothing this close. She was keeping an eye on it to make sure they didn't have to evacuate.
