CIS Roundup: Western bounces back from last week’s loss with win over Waterloo

LONDON, Ont. – Chris Merchant and the Western Mustangs atoned for a rare regular-season loss last week with a commanding 75-14 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in CIS football action on Saturday.

Merchant threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns as Western (2-1) bounced back from 38-31 loss to Carleton on Sept. 4.

Alex Taylor ran for 141 yards and a score. Fellow Mustangs running backs Trey Humes and Cedric Joseph also rushed for TD’s and back-up quarterback Ben Bergamin ran in another.

George Johnson was Western’s top receiver with 100 yards and two touchdowns. Myles Rombough and Anthony Joyal had the others while kicker Marc Liegghio added 21 points, including four field goals and a rouge.

Lucas McConnel was 15 of 33 passing for 199 yards and two touchdowns for winless Waterloo (0-3).

GUELPH, Ont. — Brandon Gordon rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns as Guelph (2-1) avoided a scare by rallying past Queen’s (0-2) in the second half.

OTTAWA — Gee-Gees quarterback Derek Wendel was intercepted three times, but he also threw for 441 yards with three TD strikes as Ottawa (2-0) defeated McMaster (2-1).

TORONTO — Running back Kayden Johnson rushed for two touchdowns and Brett Hunchas threw for 540 yards and three scores as York (2-1) held off Windsor (1-2).

MONTREAL — Vincent Alarie-Tardif Laval ran in for two touchdowns and the Laval (1-1) defence forced three safeties in a victory over Concordia (1-1).

SHERBROOKE, Que. — Findlay Brown’s 20-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter — his fourth of the game — was the difference as McGill (1-1) rallied from a 16-point deficit to get past Sherbrooke (1-1).
