McCain first saves, then kills health care repeal bill

WASHINGTON – First John McCain helped give the GOP health care repeal bill new life by dramatically returning to Washington and casting a deciding vote that extended the debate a few more days.

Then in a moment of late-night political drama, the Arizona Republican cast the final no vote that killed the entire initiative and denied President Donald trump a much-needed win.

Now amid finger-pointing and rancour, he’s calling on his fellow Republicans to go back to the drawing board and do it right this time.

McCain remains an opponent of Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, but he wants its replacement to emerge from a healthy, bipartisan and collegial process that he calls, “the old way of legislating in the Senate, the way our rules and customs encourage us to act.”
