A brief chronology of Peter MacKay’s life and career

OTTAWA – Here is a brief chronology of the life and career of Conservative MP Peter MacKay, who announced Friday that he is leaving federal politics.

Sept. 27, 1965: Born in New Glasgow, N.S.

1987: Graduates from Acadia University with a bachelor’s degree.

1990: Graduates from Dalhousie University with a law degree.

1991: Called to the Nova Scotia bar.

1993: Becomes Crown attorney for central Nova Scotia region.

1997: Elected to the House of Commons as Progressive Conservative MP for Pictou-Antigonish-Guysborough, essentially the same riding his father had won seven times.

1997-2002: Progressive Conservative House leader.

2003: Elected leader of the Progressive Conservatives.

2003: Negotiates merger with the Canadian Alliance party.

2006: Re-elected as a Conservative party MP, appointed minister of foreign affairs.

2007: Appointed minister of defence.

2012:Marries Nazanin Afshin-Jam, human rights activist, former Miss World Canada

2013: Becomes a father when son Kian is born in April.

2013: Appointed minister of justice.

2015: Announces he’s leaving politics.
