The Latest: Officers called incident with gunman an ambush

VALLEJO, Calif. – The Latest on officers shooting an armed man outside a California coffee shop after he pointed an assault rifle at them (all times local):

Police-dispatch recordings show that officers targeted by a gunman in body armour as they took a break at a California Starbucks reported the confrontation as an ambush while they chased the man.

The two police officers escaped injury in the confrontation on Sunday in Vallejo after the attacker’s assault rifle malfunctioned and prevented him from firing a shot, police Chief Andrew Bidou has said.

Recordings obtained by The Mercury News (http://bayareanews/2dxUgM0). captured the surprise in one officer’s voice as he and his partner sprinted after the gunman, shooting and wounding him.

The officer told dispatchers the man had come up to the Starbucks and pointed the assault rifle at them.

Bidou has called it an attempted assassination of police.

A man wearing body armour pointed an assault rifle at two police officers in a California Starbucks, only to have the weapon malfunction before he fled and was shot by the officers nearby, police said.

Vallejo Police Chief Andrew Bidou called it an “attempted assassination” of the two officers, who were on break when the confrontation occurred.

Police in Vallejo said 41-year-old Adam Powell had passed by the Starbucks six minutes earlier, apparently planning the attack. Powell was in critical condition but stable on Monday.

Police Lt. Jeff Bassett said authorities expect to arraign him within the next few days.

The Vallejo shooting came amid growing national attention to police shootings of suspects, and to attacks on police.
