Distracted drivers receive most tickets during traffic blitzes

KAMLOOPS — Mounties are continuing to blitz area roads for targetted enforcement and when they hit Seymour Street, Columbia Street and Fortune Drive this week they caught plenty of distracted drivers and cyclists.

They handed out tickets to 19 people for using electronic devices while driving. But while they were at it, they handed out 15 cycling violations including six for cycling without a helmet, five for cycling on the sidewalk, two for cycling in a crosswalk, and two for careless cycling, according to a release by Kamloops RCMP.

“The Kamloops RCMP has an ongoing commitment to traffic safety,” spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said. "They will be conducting more Road Safety Blitzes this week and throughout the summer."

The biggest fine handed out went to a motorcyclist going 105 kilometres an hour in a 50 km/h zone. In addition to the ticket, the motorcycle was impounded for seven days.
