Man charged with attempted murder after officer in Kelowna, B.C., was stabbed

KELOWNA, B.C. – A 39-year-old man faces numerous charges, including attempted murder, for allegations he stabbed an RCMP officer from Kelowna, B.C.

Richard McCrea is also accused of aggravated assault of a police officer, attempt to disarm an officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting arrest.

Police say they received a complaint about people camping on private property late Saturday, the RCMP responded and just minutes into an interaction the officer was stabbed above the eye.

The RCMP say the officer’s gun was discharged during the struggle and, though the suspect was not hit, he began to harm himself with the knife.

More officers arrived on scene and the man was arrested.

Police say the officer was treated and released from hospital to recover at home, while McCrea was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries and remains in custody until his next court appearance on April 11.
