Opera fans note: Vienna staging rare original version of Wagner’s Flying Dutchman

VIENNA – Opera fans, take note. A Vienna stage is the venue for an extremely rarely performed version of Richard Wagner’s original “Flying Dutchman” that was originally rejected and rewritten by another composer.

The version of work being presented Thursday by the Theater an der Wien was written by the German composer in 1841. It was bought by the Paris Opera, which then had the music rewritten by another composer based on Wagner’s libretto. The version written by Wagner that is normally performed now did not premier until two years later, in 1843.

Thursday’s new production of the original Dutchman is directed by Olivier Py, with Marc Minkowsky conducting an orchestra playing original instruments of Wagner’s era.

For those who can’t be in Vienna: It will be streamed Nov. 24.
