Prolific Kelowna offender back behind bars and that’s just the start

KELOWNA – A prolific offender who was in the vehicle that struck and seriously injured a newspaper carrier in Kelowna in December 2013 has been sentenced to four months in jail for driving while disqualified.

Nathan Fahl, 27, also received a three year driving prohibition after RCMP constables saw him driving on Oct. 16, 2015.

Fahl has an extensive history in B.C. courts including a 2012 conviction for dangerous operation of motor vehicle, driving with a suspended licence in 2011 and several other charges going back to 2007.

He will be back in court again Feb. 1 to face two charges of theft of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified. A courthouse source says he was caught trying to steal an RCMP bait vehicle on March 30, 2016.

A province-wide arrest warrant was issued in May when he did not show up for court and he was arrested again days later, according to a Crime Stoppers release at the time.

Fahl is best known for being in a vehicle with two other people on Dec. 6, 2013, when they allegedly tried to avoid a police road check on Springfield Road after leaving a house party in Rutland.

During the ensuing pursuit a fire hydrant was damaged and 41-year-old newspaper carrier Steve Kania was seriously injured.

Fahl was originally charged with six offences, including dangerous and impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop at an accident and carrying or threatening to use a weapon, but charges were stayed when one of his passengers, Donald Brodie, claimed he was the driver.
