Stocks recovered most of an early loss and drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street Wednesday as gains for banks and industrial companies were offset by losses elsewhere in the market.
The market slumped in the early going after a key U.S. trade negotiator stoked doubt over how much progress was being made in trade talks between the U.S. and China.
On Wednesday:
The S&P 500 index dropped 1.52 points, or 0.1 per cent, to $2,792.38.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 72.82 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 25,985.16.
The Nasdaq composite gained 5.21 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 7,554.51.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies picked up 3.57 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 1,581.05.
For the week:
The S&P 500 is down 0.29 points, or 0.01 per cent.
The Dow is down 46.65 points, or 0.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 26.97 points, or 0.4 per cent.
The Russell 2000 is down 9.01 points, or 0.6 per cent.
For the year:
The S&P 500 is up 285.53 points, or 11.4 per cent.
The Dow is up 2,657.70 points, or 11.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 919.23 points, or 13.9 per cent.
The Russell 2000 is up 232.49 points, or 17.24 per cent.
