‘A dedicated Albertan:’ Premier Notley says Getty was committed and hard-working
EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says former premier Don Getty was a dedicated Albertan who also worked hard to make Canada stronger.
She says Getty distinguished himself not only in politics, but also insports and business.
She points to his role in diversifying Alberta’s economy, introducing self-government for Metis and helping to create the Heritage Savings Trust Fund.
She says his greatest legacy may be his creation of a holiday in February for families to reconnect and spend time together.
Family Day is now celebrated in several provinces.
Getty died early this morning of heart failure at an Edmonton long-term care centre.
“It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of former premier Don Getty,” Notley said in a release
“Premier Getty was a dedicated Albertan. He was also a committed Canadian who worked hard to make our federation stronger.”
