Kamloops Community Band hosts concert

KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops Community Band is proud to present The Richard Dickens Memorial Scholarship Concert on Thursday, March 2ndt, 2017, at the South West Community Church, featuring special guests, the School District 73 Honour Band.  The concert runs from 7:00-9:00pm, doors open at 6:30.

The Kamloops Community Band was founded by Dick Dickens in 2001, to provide a place outside of school for students, teachers, retirees and other community members to continue playing their instruments.  Alongside fellow director Cliff Noakes, Dick led the band through many years of rehearsals and concerts, including their annual Christmas concert in Chase, as a benefit for the local food bank.

Following Dickens’ passing in 2009, the band continued the tradition of giving concerts in the community, playing in Riverside Park on Canada Day, playing in various retirement homes, and has made an annual event of this benefit concert in Dickens’ memory.  The proceeds from the concert will go towards the Richard Dickens Music Scholarship, a $2,000 per year, four-year award intended to recognize a student who has demonstrated exemplary aptitude and achievement in music and who is continuing full-time studies in music at the post-secondary level.

The Community Band is pleased to be joined by the School District 73 Honour Band.  Every year, many of the finest student musicians from Kamloops and area secondary schools form a Concert Band that performs at a gala concert under the direction of acclaimed guest conductors.  The Honour Band normally performs in the fall, but will be getting together for this additional performance with the Community Band.
