Freight cars roll head-on into train; 2 injured 4 seriously

VIENNA – Austrian emergency officials say that 12 people were injured, four seriously, after five unaccompanied freight cars rolled down a stretch of track and slammed head-on into a regional passenger train.

The accident Wednesday occurred near the town of Wieselburg, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Vienna. Regional fire department spokesman Franz Resperger says the freight cars rolled between 10 and 12 kilometres (6 to 7 miles) before colliding with the passenger train.

Red Cross official Andreas Zenker says the most seriously injured victim had to be resuscitated before being flown by helicopter to a hospital.

Police are investigating the cause and details of the accident.
