FLOOD WATCH 2017: Penticton seeks emergency funding for marina breakwater repairs

PENTICTON  – Tuesday night's windstorm caused so much damage to the Penticton Yacht Club’s breakwater the city has applied for emergency funding for repairs before the barrier fails completely.

City of Penticton Chief Administrative Officer Peter Weeber said in a press release issued Wednesday evening the city was talking to Emergency Management B.C. to secure emergency funds to repair the break wall.

Weeber said the marina sustained thousands of dollars in damage following the May 23 windstorm, including the failure of two large sections of the breakwater.

Erosion continued all day yesterday. Emergency Management B.C. and city staff spent most of the day assessing the damage, estimated at $100,000.

A decision regarding funding is anticipated Thursday, May 25.

Weeber said another wind event could prove calamitous for the marina as even minimal wave action continues to erode the breakwall.
